Outline of Research at the Start

本研究は魚類の中でも著しく高い形態の多様性を示すウバウオ科について分類群の形態・生態、および遺伝的特徴の包括的な把握と分類学的整理、および系統関係の解明を行い、ウバウオ科の進化史を再構成を経て、本科魚類が示す多様な表現型について、どのような順序や方向性をもって獲得されたか、獲得には何が大きく要因したのかを明らかにすることを計画している。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究は、三大洋に広く分布するウバウオ科魚類のうち、分類学的に多くの問題が指摘されているインド・太平洋産の分類群を中心に実施した。形態および遺伝的特徴に基づく分類学的再検討の結果、同海域に分布するウバウオ科魚類は、4未記載属および19未記載種を含む40属87種に分類されるのが妥当であると判断された（現在、記載準備中）。とくに、本海域に分布する属の数はウバウオ科全体の74％を占めており、属レベルでの顕著な分化が明らかとなった。
さらに、系統関係を明らかにするため、遺伝子データに基づく系統解析を実施した。解析は、本研究で新たに配列を決定した7属17種を含むインド・太平洋産37属57種を対象とし、ミトコンドリアゲノム由来の2遺伝子座および核ゲノム由来の5遺伝子座、計4,730塩基対の配列データを用いた。また、ウバウオ科の進化的背景を明らかにする目的で、得られた系統樹に形態データをマッピングし、各分類群の吸着生態や分布パターンについてもこれまでの知見を整理し統合した。
その結果、属レベルでの顕著な分化の背景には、（1）吸着生態の多様化、（2）歯の形態の多様化、（3）口部の形態、頭部の感覚孔、吸盤構造、体の色彩パターンなどの複数形質における平行進化が、大きな要因として関与していることが明らかとなった。特に、歯の形態に見られる多様性は、今後、ウバウオ科の食性を含む生態学的研究へと発展する可能性を示唆している。
今後は、ウバウオ科全体の進化史を解明するため、地中海およびアメリカ大陸沿岸に分布する分類群に対しても同様の解析を進め、比較検討を行うことが課題である。
