Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements
The results of international collaborative studies on urate transporters showed that 1) a novel GLUT9/SLC2A9 mutation that causes loss of function exists as an etiologic mutation of renal hypouricemia type 2, 2) novel Jr(a-) blood group-related gene mutations that cause defective cell membrane expression of ABCG2 protein exist in ABCG2, 3) loss-of-function mutations in ABCG2 may be a risk for hyperuricemia and gout in women as well as men, and 4) a large international collaborative study has revealed many new gene polymorphisms that are a risk factor for gout.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
