| Research Abstract |
This study is to investigate how the Kenjutsu (Japanese Fencing) schools had been maintained in the rural Kanto districts such as Kouzuke in Gunma prefecture,Awa,Kazusain and Shimohusa in Chiba,Shimotsuke in Tochigi, and Musahi in Tokyo,throughout the Edo era. This study especially investigated locations of the Kenjutsu schools (dojo:of Nakazawa Kiyotada (1797-1878)),the master of Onoha-Ittoryu Kenjutsu school,the Higuchi family (Higuchi Masasada, Higuchi Sadataka,Higuchi Sadao, Higuchi Sadateru, Higuchi Sadakore,Higuchi Sadahiro,masters of Maniwa nen ryu)and Ichikawa Shirozaemon,assistance by the leading disciples, and wooden frames with their pupils' names dedicated by each Kenjyutsu school to shrines,and locations of the shrines.
At the end of Edo era, the Saito Family in Inume was one of the Hachioji Sennin-Doshin and the village head of Inume.The collection of the Saito family contains old documents. Until 2013, we have made lists of 4700 items of the collection.
