Research Abstract |
Previous survey revealed that native Japanese giant salamander is genetically polluted through hybridization with alien Chinese salamanders in the Kamo River, Kyoto. In order to understand the matter more closely, we developed new microsatellite markers to make genotyping easier and more correctly. As a result of field survey in the Kamo River and other river systems, it is clarified that genetic pollution is rapidly in progress. Native salamanders might have extinguished in the Kamo River, and hybridization is becoming popular in the Kami-Katsura River in a river system different from the Kamo River. Genetic pollution of native species through hybridization of alien species or resultant hybrids is much more spread than is expected. It is urgently required to find out some way to conserve native species in isolated conditions.
