Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research aimed at an integrated interpretation of Jonas’ philosophy, which has various phases such as investigation of Gnosticism, philosophy of organism, future ethics, and theology after Auschwitz. Each phase, e. g. its teleological view of nature implied in the philosophy of organism, his metaphysics joining existence with value, his finding of detachment from nature commonly included in the modern thought and Gnosticism, and his theological thinking, is likely to be criticized as anti-modern in pluralistic contemporary society. His philosophy, however, manifests a sense of impending crisis of our situation that man does technologically manipulate not only non-human nature, but also human beings themselves. This research showed the contemporary significance of Jonas’ philosophy in seven papers, two of which were printed in two books published respectively in England and Germany, and two requested lectures in academic meetings.
