| Research Abstract |
Thematically oriented around representations of Shanghai between 1920 and 1945, this study surveys the representations of alterity among Japanese during the interwar period and their literary expression, unearthing a collection of materials pertaining to Riichi Yokomitsu's novel "Shanghai". In light of these studies, the symposium "Japanophone Literature in East Asia between the Wars 1920-1945" was held in September 2012 as an opportunity for combined discussions concerning Japanese experiences of alterity in East Asia during the interwar period and their expression in Japanophone literature. Furthermore,the proceedings of this symposium were compiled and published in August 2013 as "Ajia Yugaku 167": "Senkanki Higashi Ajia no Nihongo bungaku" [The Peripatetic Education in Asia 167:Japanophone Literature in East Asia between the Wars].
