Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research proposed a model of a miscommunication mechanism based on the usage of final particles in cross-dialectal interactions. Surveys were conducted in three areas (Kanto, Kansai, and Hokkaido) to investigate the evaluation of the Hokkaido dialect by speakers of the Kanto and Kansai dialects and that of the Kanto dialect by speakers of the Hokkaido dialect. The results were summarized as “DIF(Dialect Impression Formation) Model” and published in the form of a research report. The surveys were complemented by some other studies, such as a study concerning the usages of the final particle -sa in the Hokkaido dialect and in the Common Colloquial Japanese. Furthermore, a series of relevant contrastive studies were carried out to explicate meanings and functions of Japanese and English sentence/clause-final elements and their diachronic developments, and also to explore syntactic and functional similarities between Japanese final particles and modal particles in other languages.
