Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study examined the discussions on the relationship between divine grace and human free will in sixteenth-century Spain, focusing on the Later Salamancans, who had discussed various political issues on the basis of their understandings of that relationship. Through this investigation, it was clarified that the Later Salamancans--most of them were Jesuits--had developed a different intellectual stream from the contemprary mainstream theories, especially the social contract theory. Such Salamancan attempts are worth reconsideration as an important variety of the early-modern political thought.
