Research Abstract |
This research intended to conduct thedetailed analysis on the economic thought of James Harrington from a comparative view point between English and Dutch republicanism. The major research findings were withdrawn. Firstly, the strong criticism articulated by John Milton in his The ready & easy way to establishe a free commonwealth, 1660, should not be regarded as the one against Harrington, but as his implicit support for Harrington's agrarian law by eliminating damaging aspects for the landed elites which Harringtonian understandings for agrarian included. Secondly, the 'conservative' attitude of English republicanstowards positive influence of commerce was re-confirmed by extensive text based discussions. Thirdly & finally, this project suggested the importance of another comparative research with Grotius and Selden, both paying heavy attention to the landed elements for social vision, for further study on the economic thought of Harrington's and other fellow English republicans.
