Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The purpose of this study is a comparative investigation about relationships of ecotourism and local residents in three world nature heritage sites: Shiretoko, The Ogasawara Islands and Iriomote Island, in order to propose better tourism for local societies. This study examines two points of view. In the first place, there is local diversity of relationships with natural environments in everyday life, and this makes local diversity regarding views of nature and local communalities within each local community. This local diversity and communalities determine each local attitude towards ecotourism. Secondly, local attitudes towards world nature heritage sites have a common ground. Local people see world nature heritage sites as a negative interference and a disturbing factor from the outside. Policies of world nature heritage and nature preservation are detached from local communities, as those polices do not consider each community and their local view of nature.
