Research Abstract |
The factors that determine Japanese people's perceptions regarding the death penalty were investigated. With regard to the findings, the major reasons why people support or do not support the death penalty out of a total of 17 possibilities were extracted (Study 1). A model gauging attitudes toward the death penalty was built, paying attention to the relationships between the inner factors (for example, aggressiveness) and social factors (for example, sensible security) (Study 2). Furthermore, it was shown that the models regarding the attitudes toward the death penalty differ before and after providing the subject with appropriate information regarding the death penalty (Study 3). Finally, it was shown that the factors that influence a subject's opinions on the death penalty in contrast to the factors that influence his or her opinions on the death penalty in trial are not necessarily in agreement (Study 4).
