Research Abstract |
We found that a transcriptional factor, C/EBP plays crucial roles in gene regulation which affect cartilage degeneration in osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. C/EBP stimulates gene expressions of MMP1, MMP-3, MMP-13, which denature the cartilage matrix. C/EBP also stimulate RANKL expression to promote osteoclast formation that consequently promote bone destruction in rheumatoid arthritis. Furthermore, C/EBP repress the expression of type II collagen which is a major matrix molecule of cartilage.
