Research Abstract |
In this study, I examine how utilitarian ideas were widely diffused in various branches of moral philosophy in nineteenth century Britain, where the so-called 'Organisation of Knowledge' had gradually been processed. In so doing, I pay a special attention to the importance not only of Jeremy Bentham's theoretical influence, but also of James Mill's theoretical, practical, and personal influence among the utilitarian group, the 'Philosophic Radicals'.
