Research Abstract |
This study argues that Universal Grammar allows two distinct structures for non-restrictive relative clauses: (i) a structure where a non-restrictive relative clause is not integrated into the matrix clause and (ii) a structure where a non-restrictive relative clause is integrated into the matrix clause like restrictive relative clauses, but it is juxtaposed with its head unlike restrictive relative clauses. English employs the former and Japanese the latter.
