Research Abstract |
This study investigated whether Japanese EFL learners were able to utilize syntactic and phonological information when processing an English sentence. In order to achieve this goal learners' verb subcategorization knowledge was examined by grammatical judgment tasks, reading sentence processing tasks, and sentence production tasks. Also listening sentence processing task was carried out. Those results overall suggested that intermediate and beginning EFL learners did not retain stable subcategorized knowledge. The beginners' knowledge of subcategorization was scarce that in processing sentences they only relied on meaning of words. Further research should be done since the participants in this study were mostly intermediate and beginning students. The advanced learners' data will give us a whole picture of the EFL learners' subcategorization knowledge.
