Research Abstract |
This longitudinal comparative study attempted to investigate factors which influence motivated learning behavior in two English language learning environments: a distinctly international Japanese university and a non-international Japanese university. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected on language contact in an effort to investigate changes in attitudes toward the international English-speaking community and changes in resulting motivated learning behavior. Adding to previous research, including two projects by the Principal Investigator (Aubrey 2009, 2011) and a pilot study at these two institutions, this two-year study addresses the following research questions. How do the motivational and attitudinal dispositions of first-year Japaneseuniversity English learners differ in an ‘international university’ environmentand a ‘non-international university’ environment? How do the motivational and attitudinal dispositions of first-year Japaneseuniversity English learners change over the period of one academic year in an‘international university’ environment and a ‘non-international university’environment?
