Research Abstract |
Among intestinal protozoan parasites, Entamoeba histolytica infects large intestine and Cryptosporidium parvum infects small intestine via carbohydrates of the mucus. To elucidate the reason for this difference in the site of infections, recombinant lectins expressed in E. coli and 56 kinds of synthetic glycopeptides were prepared. However, it was difficult to obtain an active Entamoeba lectin. Therefore, a new assay using Entamoeba histolytica membrane and neo-glycoproteins was established. The reason for mouse strain-dependent susceptibility to Entamoeba histolytica infection was elucidated by using this assay.
