Research Abstract |
Erythropoietin is endogenously expressed in the central nervous system (CNS). EPO in the CNS, mainly produced in astrocytes. We investigated the effect of general anesthetics on EPO expression in the mouse brain and primary cultured astrocytes. We found the common inhibitory effect of the general anesthetics against hypoxia-induced EPO upregulation in the mouse brain through a direct effect on astrocytes.
