Outline of Research at the Start

トリウムの同位体トリウム229 (Th-229) は、共鳴エネルギーがわずか8.3 eVと異常に低い原子核遷移をもつ．8.3 eVは波長に換算すると149 nmの真空紫外であり、レーザーを作ることができるエネルギーである．すなわちTh-229は、原子核を直接レーザー分光することができる、現在知られている中では唯一の元素である．その応用として注目されているのが、この原子核遷移の共鳴周波数を基準とする周波数標準「原子核時計」である．本研究では、原子核時計の実現にむけ、トリウム229イオンをレーザー冷却する手法を確立する．
