Outline of Research at the Start

「A. 氷天体海洋モデルによる組成決定要因の解明」では、氷天体海洋モデルで、地下海表層水の組成を、形成時の太陽からの距離や岩石組成に対して予測し、これとウェッブ望遠鏡の観測データを比較する。モデル構築を2023~2024年度にかけて行い、観測解釈を2025~2026年度に行う。モデル構築に必要な実験は初年度から継続して行う。
「B. 多様な海洋タイプでの有機化学進化の推定」では、Aで推定される天体内の水環境において生じる有機化学進化を実験とネットワーク理論から推定する。2023~2024年度に実験結果を含めたデータベースの作成を行い、化学進化推定を2025~2026年度にかけて行う。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

太陽系氷天体は、地下にある液体の海の存在から、生命存在可能性の高い天体として注目を集める。これら氷天体のうち、これまで海洋の化学・環境に迫ることができたのは、海水が宇宙に噴出するたった一つの天体であった。ところが、ジェイムズ・ウェッブ宇宙望遠鏡によって、海洋化学に関する観測データが、木星系から海王星系までで得られようとしている。本研究は、「A. 化学実験と流体計算に基づき海洋組成やその空間分布を予測する氷天体海洋モデル」と、「B.化学実験と複雑系理論に基づく有機化学進化ネットワークモデル」を構築し、観測データを解釈する。
「A.氷天体海洋モデル」については、氷天体表面での二酸化炭素の低温極域への輸送を定量モデル化し、ジェイムズ・ウェッブ宇宙望遠鏡で観測される表面二酸化炭素分布を説明するには、非常に最近に二酸化炭素が現在観測される地域に内部から供給される必要があることを突き止めた。また、地下海での生命必須金属イオン濃度を熱水実験と熱力学モデルから明らかにし、これら金属イオン濃度は地球と比べても非常に低く、生命活動自体を律速している可能性を示唆した。このように、モデル化する上での、鍵となるいくつかの化学反応過程を突き止めることができた。
「B.有機化学進化」については、土星衛星エンセラダスのプルーム内の有機分子を再解析し、特に噴出直後のプルーム粒子からエステルやエーテルなど、生体関連分子が存在していることを示した。また、その存在を説明するため、エンセラダス環境を模擬した熱水合成実験を行い、実験と観測の対比を行った。このように有機化学進化を考える上で、天体内部の化学勾配が重要であるという知見を得ることができた。

Reason

氷衛星の表層と地下海に関するモデリングについては、表層の酸化反応および生成物の表面での移動モデルについては完成し、ジェイムズ・ウェッブ宇宙望遠鏡の観測データを解釈する研究を展開している。有機化学進化については、国際共同研究で、データの再解析から新たな有機分子を発見するなど、重要な進展がある。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

「A.氷天体海洋モデル」については、海洋大循環モデル(MIT GCM)を様々な境界条件において走らせ、地下海の移流の定式化・定量化を行う。エウロパやエンセラダスといった特定天体に関する氷天体海洋モデルを構築する。
「B.有機化学進化」については、複雑系科学ネットワークについては、化学反応のデータベースおよび過去の実験研究のサーベイを用い、数千の反応をそれが生じる水環境条件ごとに分類することを継続して行う。得られた有機化学反応モデルをエンセラダスの水環境の下で計算する。
