Outline of Research at the Start |
Respect for human autonomy is a requirement for the development of trustworthy AI. Despite its importance, no explicit formalization of autonomy had been put forward for this purpose. This project tackles this challenge by mathematically quantifying the autonomy of any system, identifying the strategic conditions that could undermine or enhance its autonomy, and experimentally testing autonomy with human and artificial agents. The research builds autonomy from axiomatic principles as opposed to priorly prescribed goals. The project advances the development of ethical AI.
