Outline of Research at the Start

My project will trace the transition from Enlightenment idealization of the Cook accounts through to more critical Romantic intermedial collaborations to the quasi-ethnographic depictions created by nineteenth-century missionaries.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

I published a collection of essays I co-edited with Fabien Arribert-Narce (University of Edinburgh) entitled "Intermedial Encounters Between Image, Music and Text: With And Beyond Roland Barthes" (Peter Lang). This featured my essay on W. G. Sebald’s Austerlitz. I also published an essay on Percy Shelley in Evy Varsamapoulou’s collection Romantic Futures and an article on Herman Melville in European Romantic Review. I submitted a chapter on Bankim Chandra Chatterji’s Anandamath for publication in the Routledge Handbook to Global Literature and Culture in the Romantic Era. I also submitted a chapter on Phillip de Loutherbourg for publication in the collection Intermedial Encounters: Identity, Ethics and Aesthetics, to be edited by Marion Schmid and Francois Giraud for Peter Lang.
I was appointed co-editor (with Peter Kitson and Rosinka Chaudhuri) of The Bloomsbury Handbook of Romanticism and Asia (contracted to be published in 2025): a major edited collection of over thirty-five essays written by world-leading international scholars that provides a comprehensive overview of British Romanticism in Asia.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

My personal research is proceeding as planned. However, I am considering reorganizing the planned conference on Pacific Intermediality into a special symposium on the topic at the JAERS 50th conference (Kyoto, October 2024). I am currently in contact with Nikki Hessel and Tom Ford about their travelling to Japan to speak at this event.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

I plan to complete a book proposal and sample chapters on 'Pacific Intermediality' to submit to Routledge publishers. I will complete a book chapter for the edited collection of scholarly essays Unknown Tongues (eds. Brecht de Groote and Rhys Kaminski-Jones, Edinburgh University Press -- abstract already accepted) and a book chapter for World Literature: Approaches, Practices, and Pedgagogy (eds. Eli Park Sorensen and Klaudia Lee, Routledge – abstract already accepted).
I plan to give a presentation at the North American Society for the Study of Romanticism Conference (Washington DC, August 2024)and the 50th Annual Conference of the JAER (Kyoto, October 2024).
I will organize an international symposium “Global Barthes and Intermediality”at Meiji University in May 2024. I will also co-organise and present a paper at a symposium called ‘Sites and Networks of Intermediality’ symposium (Edinburgh, March 2025) which will examine the range of places in which intercultural intermedial exchange occurs, from the creative exchanges between authors, adaptors, collaborators, editors, illustrators and translators to physical locations including universities and schools, museums and theatres, to screens, virtual reality and social networks.
