Outline of Research at the Start	中世以来、地中海東部のレヴァント地方は多数の民族が行き交う混成的な空間であった。本研究では、レヴァント地方のイタリア人の存在に光を当て、イタリアの言語文化とレヴァント地方とのあいだの関係性を明らかにする。具体的な対象としてはイスタンブルとアレクサンドリアという二つの都市を取り上げる。そして、イタリア本国の知識人がそれらの都市に対してどのような眼差しをもって臨んだか、また、それらの都市出身の文学者が本国の文化に何をもたらしたかを考察する。これらの研究を通じて、19世紀以降、レヴァント地方がイタリアに対してもちえた文化的意味を考察する。
