Outline of Research at the Start |
This research aims at developing a new nursing English extensive listening online tool along with listening video log activities designed to improve listening and speaking skills among Japanese undergraduate students. First, we intend to examine the needs of undergraduate students through the use of a survey in Japanese. Then, we will design the online listening library and, finally, collect listening and speaking proficiency data using the Versant Speaking test and a qualitative analysis of video logs.
|
Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
For promoting extensive viewing among students, we attempted to develop a new platform to allow students to create, store and manage videos of different durations. After months of discussion with both Chiba University Smart Office and private suppliers, we came to the realization that it was technically unrealistic to establish a single platform possessing all the functionalities required for both student data storage and ensuring student data security. At the end of this first year, we have decided to use two distinct platforms connected to Google Classroom to facilitate video production and storage: FLIP and EdPuzzle. We have reached agreements with the English testing company Versant to use their speaking tests for assessing spoken fluency among both 1st year and 4th year undergraduates. The first test implementation will happen in before Summer 2024.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Many technical limitations (storage space, data accessibility, data security) have stalled the development of a single unified platform for extensive viewing. However, we have now changed our plans to assess the feasibility of building an extensive viewing protocol using two available commercial services: FLIP and EdPuzzle.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Discussions are under way to ensure the safe and secure access of students to both FLIP and EdPuzzle through the existing Google Classroom platform. A baseline for spoken fluency will be established for all 1st- and 4th year students.
