Outline of Research at the Start

The goal is to develop a learner management system (LMS) that integrates traditional LMS software elements (such as tasks and assessments) with interactive hardware tools (smartphone/tablet & head-mounted displays). In parallel, learning content will focus on Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL). CLIL allows students to acquire second language skills while studying subject matter.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The Principal Investigator created a prototype of a relational database that allows content (e.g., text, video, audio, photos) to be displayed dynamically. The functioning system was developed and tested using an iterative design process, and the User Interface (UI) is now being modified for improved usability. After the system is redesigned and validated, experiments will begin. This will include a pilot-study in practical environments which will collect survey data. A co-investigator (CI) created, tested, and evaluated 2 MR (mixed reality) environments that simulate real-world situations. Two research projects were conducted to examine the functionality and effectiveness of the MR systems. Two separate presentations were given by a CI and co-researchers at a conference in Japan. Both projects are being used to develop additional experiments with new VR content.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

The research project is progressing smoothly. The Principal Investigator has designed a prototype of an LMS (Learning Management System) that can display content (e.g., text, visuals, audio) in a variety of formats and relationships. The LMS design and layouts are currently being refined based on user feedback. Once complete, the system will be pilot tested by educators (i.e., language teachers). One co-investigator (CI) is now working on 2 new MR (mixed reality) environments related to education. The other CI has monitored the progress of the project overall and will provide data analysis related to the LMS project in the coming year (2024).

Strategy for Future Research Activity

The major goal for the upcoming period is to finalize the UI design of the LMS (learning management system) based on feedback from users. Then deploy the system in an experiment with teachers and learners. The secondary goal is to build content for the system, particularly MR (mixed reality) content. Given the long-lead time for MR content, a co-investigator (CI) is working in parallel with the development of the LMS. As experiments are conducted in the next 12-24 months, the data will be analysed with the help of the second co-investigator.
