Outline of Research at the Start

This project aims to develop an SDGs and Social Justice vocabulary service list as well as a variety of level-appropriate materials centred around the SDGs and social activism for teaching global studies and English. All materials will be made available to educators on an open-access website.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Significant progress has been made on this project. Our website was established to provide open access to our materials and results. Version 1.1 of the SDGs Service List with access to the electronic study sets for these words, and our initial classroom materials consisting of four lessons, inclusive of readings and activities written by two of the researchers, have been shared there. In presentations, our materials were shared with educators at other universities in Japan and abroad. Additionally, two of our researchers authored a paper on social justice and language education in Japan that will be published in an international, peer-reviewed journal in May. Our findings suggested important directions for our future material development including how our interviews should be approached.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

We have done significant research and conducted two studies. One of these studies will be published in an international, peer-reviewed journal in May 2024, and we aim to send the manuscript of our second study to another international, peer-reviewed journal for review sometime in mid-2024.
While there has been a slight delay in making many materials available on our website, we continue to make progress in publicly sharing the materials we develop and our research results. We have ended the year by developing a list of questions to serve as the basis of our interviews, which we will begin as the project's next phase. We have also started to narrow down activists who will share their work with us to develop into lessons that can be shared on our website.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

After developing general research questions, in the next academic year, we will begin to conduct interviews with SDG and social justice activists in Japan. As we finish the interviews, we will develop lessons around them and make these materials also available on our website. We will also continue to pilot the materials in classes and publish our results and findings in terms of motivation and culture. In presentations, we will continue to share our materials with educators at other universities in both Japan and abroad.
