Outline of Research at the Start |
This study will analyze the efficacy of Japanese medical students learning how to communicate in English in a given scenario using a speech-recognition-based app. The efficacy of the newly developed app will be compared against the efficacy of learning by studying printed/electronic materials.
|
Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
As stated in the Purpose of the Research section, the app which is to be developed through this project uses a completely different architecture from existing language learning apps and thus requires finetuning of the assessment component (the algorithm). In AY2023, we have determined that this component has to fulfill two requirements pulling in opposing directions: (1) the algorithm must be complex enough to allow scoring of any utterance which could be interpreted as conveying the desired meaning; (2) the algorithm must be simple enough to minimize burdening the learner with information in order to ensure continued engagement. In practice, this has required extensive discussions with the programmer to devise solutions which offer an optimal balance.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Progress was made in completing the goals set for FY2023 as follows: (1) creation of the medical interview scripts: Completed (2) development of matching algorithm and app: Pending (3) student data collection (traditional study method): Partially completed. Regarding (2): The first version of the app/algorithm was supposed to be ready by March 2024 but got delayed because of difficulties in creating the algorithm program. Regarding (3): Student data collection (baseline) was carried out at the principal investigator's institution but had to be aborted at two co-investigators' institutions. This was because one co-investigator will move to another institution during AY2024, while the other co-investigator has not been able to obtain approval from his institution to collect student data.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Regarding (2): The timetable for app/algorithm creation has been revised as follows: First version of app/algorithm completed by August 2024 and avaiable to students from the fall of 2024. Rergarding (3): Student data collection will be limited to two institutions (University of Tsukuba and IUHW students). Data for AY2023 and AY2024 will constitute baseline (pre-intervention) data, while data collected for AY2025 and AY2026 will constitute post-intervention data.
