Outline of Research at the Start |
The first year is mainly for additional piloting of the listening passages, the comprehension questions, and the vocabulary test items. The second year is primarily for data collection, followed by analysis. The third year consists of refined analysis and the dissemination of research findings.
|
Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In the first year of this research project, the first aim was to fully develop all of the needed language assessments (activities that measure forms of language ability) and set up the online means of delivering them to participants. Some of these language assessments are delivered live in person or on Zoom, and some are delivered on demand. The second aim was piloting these instruments to check their functioning. These two aims were met. These language assessment instruments are meant to measure vocabulary knowledge and listening comprehension. The texts used are made up of the tested words and these eight short texts of different content have much vocabulary in common. To investigate the role of genre, four of them were expository and four of them were narrative.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
It took awhile during the spring and summer to ensure that the language assessments were made properly and accurately, and that they would be easily accessible via the participants' computers and/or mobile devices. In the fall and winter, a modest number of participants were recruited and this number was sufficient for the purposes of piloting the instruments. The language assessments functioned as anticipated.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In AY2024, we will proceed with the research plan, and as no changes to the language assessments are needed, this process is straightforward. We do not foresee any problems regarding the design or implementation of the research.
