Outline of Research at the Start

Broadly speaking, in the 1st year of the project it is intended that a review of the most recent relevant research will be undertaken. A research group will be formed, and an internet presence created. In the 2nd year, it is intended that the exchanges with EFL countries will be broadened and a greater focus on specific outcomes will be investigated. In the 3rd year, it is planned to continue to develop the exchanges with all countries, and if feasible create and publish templates and guides which can be used by other educators and researchers.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

We have engaged in a number of virtual exchanges with colleagues in other countries, including Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, China, Slovenia and the USA, incorporating English-Japanese language translation and reading with international partners demonstrating the versatility of virtual exchange (VE).

Two conference presentations were given and one research paper was published.

Further publications are anticipated as the publications review processes proceed.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

We have continued to engage in exchanges, searching for new avenues of research in order to further elucidate the benefits of virtual exchange. The writing of research findings is underway, which we anticipate will lead to wide dissemination of the research and of JSPS.

Further exchanges have been planned, and will be carried out in 2025.

The groundwork has been laid for a symposium on VE to be held in the latter part of 2025 in Osaka.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

Research projects will be carried out in 2025, including investigations into how AI applications can be incorporated into VE. AI in this context is a very difficult and urgent topic to be addressed.

A symposium (https://vejapan.com) will be held in November, 2025, bringing together researchers and educators from around the world.

Further conference presentations and publications will be done.
