Outline of Research at the Start |
This research is an investigation into the effect of studying abroad on the well-being of Japanese learners of English through measurement of psychological variables related to foreign language learning.
|
Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In FY2023 we created a questionnaire with 37 Likert scale items to measure levels of several psychology constructs in order to test the recent model positive L2 self-system with three levels (global, domainal, and situational). The pilot questionnaire was implemented at four private universities. Using Rasch model analysis and correlational analysis, results indicated strong correlations at two of the three levels in the positive L2 self-system model, while moderate correlations on the domainal level.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
We experienced delays in analyzing the data due to workload and slight miscommunication over the goals of the study. One researcher has weak internet connectivity at work and none at home, which also delayed efficient coordination.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In 2024 we plan to send results of the pilot study for publication. We also plan to reduce the number of questionnaire items and slightly revise weaker items to reduce questionnaire fatigue and strengthen correlations among the domainal variables. The revised questionnaire will be implemented with one group of students who do not study abroad, and one group of students who go overseas for a full year. Finally, we will design the qualitative component of the study, to take place in 2025, with advice from overseas researchers.
