Outline of Research at the Start |
This project will analyze, on a large scale, how courses in intercultural development affect second language (L2) learners. Through international collaboration, we aim to understand students’ values and assess their language acquisition before and after global education learning experiences. Global education involves diverse classes and events: courses in English language acquisition especially with CLIL pedagogy. As the analytical assessment tool for international, multicultural, and transformative learning, we use the BEVI in several international institutions.
|
Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
We found that there were differences between language proficiency groups and cultural understanding. This study compared test scores of language (TOEFL) and the BEVI for 76 Japanese students. Differences were reported between language proficiency groups for aspects of cultural understanding; with a significant correlation (r=0.3, p<0.05) between proficiency and Global Aspect. Further analysis of the domestically instructed group revealed little change over time. In contrast, and demonstrating the depth of understanding that can be gained from the BEVI, a 1-year case study was examined. Dramatic changes in this student's worldview confirm our view that overseas programs are more impactful than domestic ones. Additionally, more international universities (4) collaborations were initiated.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
We focused on collecting various data from various different countries, such as from Uzbekistan, Mexico, Hawaii, and Thailand. We have published one co-authored book and achieved 5 domestic and 7 international presentations. Also, we hold a monthly research meeting to promote our research with confirming our mutual goals and understanding. We have submitted our paper to an international journal and now we are waiting for the result.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
We will keep collecting various cross-cultural data from the previous collaborative universities. In addition, this year, the 4 politechnics in Singapore will collaborate with us. These new collaborators will require advice on how to implement the BEVI and work with the data. Online workshops will be arranged. We will be able to collect data from them and present the results at the ISATE, the international conference. A wider variety of the BEVI data will promote our research objectively and professionally. We'll invite Prof. Craig Shealy, the representative of the developers of the BEVI from the USA, to hold some workshops in August 2024. This opportunity will surely develop our research content and lead to our goals.
