Outline of Research at the Start	本研究は、シンガポール共和国においてなぜこれまで政権交代が起きなかったのか、その原因を明らかにすることである。同国の政治体制は実質的に権威主義体制であるとして、この政治体制が維持されてきた原因を明らかにしようとする多くの論考がこれまでに発表されている。これらの研究と本研究の違いは、この政治体制を支える制度が確立したとする時期である。従来の研究では政権与党が政権を獲得した後の活動からこの国の政治体制の強靱性を明らかにしようとしているのに対して、本研究では政権獲得前の時期に制定された憲法、選挙制度、そして治安維持制度にその原因を求める。
