Outline of Research at the Start

蝦夷地江差湊の商業集積が、近世・近代移行期における江差地域の経済発展と衰退に果たした役割を検討する。北前船が衰退する明治20年代以前における同地の資本蓄積の実態を、北前船との取引関係、津軽、西渡島両地域との関係で、関川家を中心とする商家経営に焦点をおいて明らかにする。その上で、明治20年代の北前船の衰退に対応した、江差商人の地域経済振興（再編成）のための行動を、江差銀行や諸企業の設立と経営の内容に踏み込んで検討する。これら銀行や企業の経営挫折、江差商人の東京への移住後における江差地域の衰退、「工業化から取り残された地域」になっていく過程を実証的に明確化する。
