Outline of Research at the Start	国民国家形成をめざす一国の公教育制度形成において、ひろく人々を教育制度に取り込み国民意識を与える義務教育制度の実施はその根幹をなすものである。しかし、植民地においては、その様相は異なる。植民地における教育は、当初、被植民者と支配者を区分することを基本とし、その後、教育を通じて異民族支配を支配と感じさせない「同化」政策に向かう。しかし、現実には支配者と被支配者の差別が存在する植民地支配の中で、その「同化」は大きな虚構をはらむものでもあり、教育による理性の発達はその虚構に気付かせるものともなる。
