Outline of Research at the Start

This study will provide fundamental insights into the functioning of eukaryote-eukaryote photosymbioses through the study of large benthic foraminiferal host-symbionts associations, photosymbiosis functionning and their effect of the hosts's ecological traits.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Metagenomes were obtained from a total of 50 single-cell foraminifera specimens belonging to 10 different species. Analysis of the results are in progress and show diverse symbioses with foraminifera harbouring green and red algae, diatoms and dinoflagellates. Preliminary results suggest that symbionts are host specific.
Behavioural experiments using timelapse imaging were done to observe changes in behaviour with light conditions.
Experimental images remain to be analyzed before drawing any quantitative conclusions about the foraminiferal behavioural response but qualitative observations suggest that the behaviour of the foraminifera might be influenced by their symbionts.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

Work is progressing as planned.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

This fiscal year I will focus on the analysis of the foraminiferal metagenomes and prepare the associated publication.
At the same time, behavioural analyses will be performed and complementary metabolic activity measurements will be done.
