Outline of Research at the Start

学齢期における近視人口は増加し続けているが、近視が発症・進行する原因は未だ解明されていない部分が多い。強度近視に伴う網脈絡膜変性、網膜剥離および黄斑下出血は、視力低下・失明の重要な原因でもあり、強度近視は世界的にみても中途失明の上位を占めており、QOL低下に大きく関わっている疾患である。
そこで本研究は、日本人大規模集団を対象に幼児期から高齢に至るまでの屈折度数（D: Dioptre / ジオプトリー）の経時的変化の全体像を解明するとともに、学齢期における成長曲線と屈折度数変化の関連を分析する長期縦断疫学研究を実施することを企図するに至った。
