Outline of Research at the Start

This study elaborates on how aging and shrinking populations affect nature conservation. The study will build scenarios of future transitions in nature conservation and provide policy recommendations based on results derived from a literature review and multiple case studies in Japan, Poland, and Myanmar.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The main achievement was the development of the conceptual framework on how population ageing and shrinking might affect nature conservation efforts and priorities. This was achieved through a workshop, site visits and discussions with local stakeholders in Okinawa. The framework identifies dynamics affecting nature conservation, and points to the type of data required in each study site.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

Due to the political situation in Myanmar, and the related security concerns and travel restrictions, it was not possible to visit the country and finalise all expected activities. These activities are expected to take place in FY2024.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

In FY2024 it is expected that the team will visit the study sites to conduct pilot studies before finalizing the final data collection instruments, provisionally for data collection at the end of the fiscal year. The team will also assess the feasibility of changing case studies from Fukushima to Ishikawa prefecture, as the recent earthquake provides an interesting study opportunity.
