Outline of Research at the Start

My research situates the violent, nativist backlash against globalization in 1870s Kumamoto within global and comparative intellectual history.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

This year, besides publishing articles on topics emerging from and related to, but not directly falling under, the research for this project, I presented one methodologically based paper at an international conference; drafted a chapter for an edited anthology; applied successfully for two international conference presentations for the next academic year; and engaged in research on the Hagi Rebellion, on Leroy Lansing Janes, and on the Tokutomi household, as well as other topics. I visited archives both within the country and overseas to pursue this research. Because I plan now to focus more directly on my book project rather than on publishing individual articles, I anticipate that the output for these research projects will be delayed. My research continues nonetheless.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

As mentioned above, I hope to shift my focus toward working intensively on a single book rather than publishing individual articles, so my research output has decreased and will decrease slightly. Also, publications on topics I have researched over the past year will be appearing next year or the year after, so there is a lag in research output.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

My next step is to draft a chapter on the Hagi Rebellion and investigate the Shianbahi Incident further. I hope to finalize my research on L.L. Janes and complete my chapter on the relationship between 1870s Kumamoto and the problem of US slavery. I will present my research at international conferences abroad.
