Outline of Research at the Start	本研究は、荒地派を中心とする日本の実存主義文学を調査し、単行本未収録作品を収集・翻刻し、戦後日本における「実存」の意義を明らかにしようとするものである。実存主義哲学者・飯島宗享が「実存主義はもう古い、といわれ始めてからすでに久しい」と嘆いて、さらに半世紀近くが経過した。いま、実存を歴史的遺物ではなく、生きるため・書くための原点として、よみがえらせることはできるのか。それを成し遂げるには、戦後日本文学における「実存」の崩壊と再生を辿り直さなければならない。また未発表・未刊行資料を収集・翻刻し、その歴史的意義を跡づけなければならない。それは、新たな文学史・精神史を構想することでもあるだろう。
