| Outline of Research at the Start |
This research aims to understand how bilateral US-Japan study abroad contributes to knowledge diplomacy. The retrospective qualitative study uses document analysis and in-depth interviews to understand the outcomes of host individual and organizational interactions in Japan and the US with American and Japanese international students. The outcomes are analyzed to understand how study abroad programs contribute to knowledge diplomacy by examining for connectivity between the two countries and with the wider world.
|
| Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The research is progressing as planned. During the reporting period, I delivered invited guest lectures at international conferences and workshops, contributing to the dissemination of preliminary findings. I have also continued to collect relevant literature and data while engaging with key stakeholders to enhance the project’s relevance and impact.

Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Progress on the research has remained on track, supported by a well-defined framework and steady implementation of planned activities. Key milestones have been met, including participation as an invited speaker at international conferences and workshops, which has facilitated early dissemination and feedback on emerging findings. Ongoing efforts to review relevant literature and engage with key stakeholders have further strengthened the direction and practical relevance of the study.
|
| Strategy for Future Research Activity |
I plan to continue the research according to the original schedule. In FY2025, I intend to carry out fieldwork in both the United States and Japan. I also aim to present my findings at an international academic conference, such as the Comparative and International Education Society (CIES) Annual Conference. However, due to financial constraints related to the current USD-JPY exchange rate and rising costs, some adjustments to the research plan may be necessary in order to realistically carry out the research.
