Outline of Research at the Start |
This research will investigate the clarify how hydro-geo-bio-chemical linkages linkages transmit inland anthropogenic impacts to ecosystems. The findings are expected to convey new insights into the scientific understanding and how to balance water resource development with ecosystem conservation.
|
Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Conceptual models as well as models based on Miyakojima Island were developed. The modeling results provide preliminary understanding of the imapcts of subsurface dams on groundwater chemistry in coastal karst aqufiers. A fieldwork was conducted focusing on assessing geological conditions and monitoring well locations both upstream and downstream of the subsurface dam. Water samples were collected from springs near the coastal areas downstream of the dam for analysis of major ions and stable isotopes. The survey aimed to identify suitable locations for coral reef sampling, but unfortunately, no appropriate sites were found. Consequently, the study will shift its focus to analyzing live shellfish, which is expected to provide also useful information on the hydro-geo-bio-chemical linkages.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Based on the findings from the field survey, identifying suitable locations for sampling coral reefs, as initially intended, has proven challenging. Consequently, this unforeseen difficulty has led to a slight delay in the research progress compared to the original plan.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
We will collect water samples from both dammed and non-dammed watersheds for comparative analysis. In our previous fieldwork survey, we encountered challenges in locating suitable areas for coral reef sampling. To address this obstacle, instead of analyzing coral reef samples as initially planned, we have opted to gather live shellfish samples. Furthermore, we will analyze the microbiological indices present in the water samples. Combining these approaches has the potential to elucidate the correlations between subsurface damming, water chemistry, and ecosystem health. Regarding the numerical modeling aspect, the models developed in previous years will undergo refinement, and the simulation results will be juxtaposed with the measurements obtained from water and shellfish samples.
