Outline of Research at the Start |
- Identify types of applications used by tourists during a hazard event and effectiveness - Examine impact of eruptions on air transport services - Interview local airlines - Examine tourism recovery plans after a disaster - Examine contents of disaster memorials and museums
|
Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Currently, we have already begun collecting data from the August 2023 disaster event which affected Maui Island in the State of Hawaii. Most of the social media and media data has already been collected and analyzed. The results of this analysis has been presented at conferences in Singapore and Okinawa, where we received feedback on our research. We are currently working on our first publication. Outside of Hawaii, our original proposal also intended to look at islands within Japan, Oceania and Europe. Due to the recent disasters that occurred in late 2023, we decided to prioritize Hawaii and Iceland due to the wildfires and volcanic eruption. If timing and funding permits, we will also examine Tonga which had an eruption two years ago, and Greece.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Currently we have already collected initial data from Hawaii, much of it due to the emergence of a major disaster four months after being awarded this grant. We have already conducted an initial round of analysis on the collected data. Secondly, for the projects relating to museums and disasters, we have already begun contacting various museums in Japan, and are determining the appropriate methodology to be used for our interviews. We also made contacts with Iceland, as mentioned in our proposal. There are some delays due to change of research partners and institutions as well as changes in global disaster events. Although we initially listed several islands for our case studies, the recent disasters in Hawaii and Iceland that began in late 2023, will be prioritized.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
I am currently working with research partners based in Australia, where we plan to conduct fieldwork in Hawaii. We will interview victims of the recent disaster, response organizations, and media representatives. I also plan to conduct the first rounds of museum interviews in Japan during late spring of 2024. Currently plans to conduct fieldwork in Iceland are to be determined, based on the situation regarding their ongoing eruption and availability of stakeholders.
