Outline of Research at the Start

This research aims to explore Muslim-friendly tourism development for outlying destinations in Japan. A sequential qualitative research approach will be adopted by conducting content analysis, destination observations and interviews with tourism stakeholders of an existing Muslim-friendly destination (i.e. Okayama prefecture). This study is timely and important as it contributes to an emerging, yet under-researched area of Muslim tourism development. Furthermore, it will contribute to an enhanced industry practice by providing evidence-based recommendations for tourism destinations to follow.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The researcher conducted additional interviews with local tourism stakeholders and visitors. Motivations, opportunities and unique challenges were identified with interviews from Japanese tourism stakeholders. Muslim tourists also depicted interesting characteristics, demonstrating how they negotiate and adapt their Islamic guidelines to non-Muslim destinations.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

Research going as planned. In the second year, the researcher planned to carry out data collection. Priliminary literature review, field observations and interviews were made. More data collection will be conducted to ensure data saturdation. Priliminary findings have been shared at international conferences and feedback was received to improved research.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

The researcher will continue with additional interviews with local business stakeholder and visitors. This is to ensure data saturation is achieved. Additionally, the researcher will continue to make field observations based on other Muslim-friendly destinations. At the same time, the research will draft articles to be published in academic journals.
