Outline of Research at the Start

COVID-19の次の脅威として、海棲哺乳類のウイルスがヒトに感染、蔓延、流行することが強く危惧されている。しかし、海のウイルスの実態はほとんど不明であり、診断技術も乏しく、ウイルスを分離するための自然宿主由来の培養細胞もなく、基礎的な知見が蓄積されていない。
本研究では、海棲哺乳類とその生息環境におけるウイルス感染・汚染実態の解明から、各種診断法の確立、ヒトへの感染リスクと病原性の解明まで、新しく「海の人獣共通感染ウイルス学」を創出することを目指す。
