| Outline of Research at the Start |
This research juxtaposes language repertoire and cognitive functions in aging adults to find out how these two domains relate to each other. It builds on a 1-year clinical investigation and on an interdisciplinary examination of concepts such as multilingualism, brain plasticity, epigenetics, etc.

| Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The project was launched in mid-2023. Preliminary preparations were first made for the planned clinical trial in Germany. Once the personnel and infrastructural requirements had been met, clinical work began at two neuropsychiatric facilities in Hamburg.
The research team held their first joint meeting on 7 September 2023, at which the theoretical and methodological premises of the project were recapitulated, initial progress was discussed and the first data collected during the clinical study was evaluated.
The second meeting of the research team took place on 19 February 2024, at which the data, which had since increased in quantity, was critically discussed and evaluated. One of the key developments presented and discussed by the lead researcher at the second team meeting was the method for parameterising the language repertoire.
On 26 April 2024, there was a meeting at the University Hospital Eppendorf. In the Centre for Psychosocial Medicine at the Institute for Medical Sociology of the University of Hamburg, the lead researcher and the lead neurologist of the clinical examination met with the gerontologists and medical sociologists and discussed the problems, advantages and disadvantages of the test method used in the clinical examination to determine the participants.

So far, the project is going according to plan and without any significant complications. The clinical trial is running smoothly. The targets set for the first year have been achieved.

| Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In this year, the research team will first meet in Nagasaki in July 2024 at a symposium organised by the project to discuss the current state of research. At the symposium, the team will also discuss the proposal to organise an international symposium to present the results of the research to the global professional community and also get an insight into the comparable work of other experts.
Another task that the team plans to tackle this year is a selective inquest into the national and international databases with the aim of collecting data on the prevalence and incidence of age-related cognitive diseases in different countries and regions.
The execution and interim evaluation of the clinical trial will also be also on the agenda.
