Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements

The applicant successfully induced an artificial fatigue-like statecharacterized by hypothermia and hypometabolism through the identification and manipulation of neurons whose activity increases during fatigue-inducing exercise (referred to as "fatigue neurons"). Furthermore, it was found that manipulating fatigue neurons expressed in the medial preoptic area (MPO) similarly induced hypothermic responses. In addition, using wild-type mice subjected to exhaustive exercise, temperature measurements taken around brown adipose tissue (BAT) and in the abdominal cavity (core) revealed a gradual decrease in both BAT and core temperatures approximately 30 minutes after the onset of exercise. This temperature decline became particularly pronounced around the time when signs of fatigue were observed. These findings suggest that neuronal circuits promoting a reduction in body temperature become more active during fatigue.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
