Outline of Research at the Start |
This research project aims to shed light on a major female writer of the French early modern literature, Madeleine de Scudery. It focuses on her series called the Conversations and seeks to determine to what extent these treatises can be qualified as philogynist.
|
Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In FY2023, I have been conducting the first survey of Madeleine de Scudery's ten volumes of conversations. With the help of my research assistant, we have made significant progress in digitizing the manuscripts. Additionally, I have taken the lead of a research group focused on the comparative history of gender in Franco-Japanese contexts (Women in French and Japanese Literatures). I have organized the first two workshops for this group, resulting in the publication of a bilingual volume. The first workshop focused on "Clothing and Adornments" and the question of beauty, while the second centered on women's education, both addressing pertinent themes for understanding the anthropological context of Madeleine de Scudery.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
The necessity of completing the manuscript based on my thesis has resulted in the postponement of my trip to France. As a result, I was unable to conduct the bibliographic work as initially intended. I have allocated time to collaborative projects, which is essential for anchoring this research in Japan. However, this has resulted in less time available for the writing process.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
For the fiscal year 2024, I aim to undertake a two-month research residency in France to allocate time to bibliographic reading. As an invited professor and keynote speaker for the international conference "Female Anger" hosted by the University of Amiens, I will also have the opportunity to give lectures on the history of gender and Scudery's conversations.
Additionally, I will continue the manuscript digitization work with my research assistant.
Furthermore, I aim at organizing a third workshop as part of the activities of the research group "Women in French and Japanese Literature." It is necessary to reinforce this collaboration to make it last.
