| Outline of Research at the Start |
Using data on ESG and organizational performance of Japanese and Malaysian organizations for 2020-2021, the main objectives of this study are:
1. to examine the effect of ESG affect organizational performance
2. to determine if governance practices affect green (environmental) and human capital (social) practices
3. to verify if green (environmental) and human capital (social) practices mediate the relationship between governance practices and organizational performance
This study will do a comparative analysis between Japan and Malaysia using data from public listed companies in both countries.

| Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This is a comparative study of the relationship among environmental, social and governance factors and organizational performance between Japan and Malaysia. Discussions were held with a professor in Fukuoka to identify the variables most appropriate for the study, particularly the measurement of organizational performance. Thereafter, a visit was made to two places under the ESG initiatives of Fukuoka REIT Corporation. The main aim is to have a better understanding of the green initiatives in Japan. So far, analysis of the Japanese data has been completed. The study offers valuable insights to organizational leaders, policy-makers, and stakeholders on leveraging the pillars of ESG to create a sustainable environment in the volatile business landscape post-COVID-19 pandemic. The results suggest that for organizations to be environmentally and socially responsible, an organization should first deploy robust corporate governance by balancing the competencies and diversities of the board or management, introducing relevant policies/procedures and reward schemes based on the initiatives achieved. The preliminary findings will be reported at an international conference in June 2024. A paper is currently being developed for submission to an appropriate journal. Data has been partially collected for the Malaysian sample.

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The project is proceeding smoothly. What needs to be done is clear. Further efforts will be made to complete data collection and analysis whenever time permits. However, time constraint is a major setback. Nonetheless, preliminary findings for the Japanese data will be presented at Center for Inclusive Leadership Conference APU 2024 (Inclusion x Sustainability) in June 2024. This conference was selected as it covers aspects of sustainability which is the focus of the project. With the completion of more comprehensive analysis, further dissemination of the results will be carried out. The development of the paper for publication will commence upon analysis of the data from the Malaysian sample. While the project was proceeding smoothly, there were some challenges - the main constraint was time and access.

| Strategy for Future Research Activity |
1. Data collection for the Malaysian sample is still pending. This will be carried out during the summer vacation. Based on the results, papers will be developed for presentation at conferences - tentatively at the 8th ASIA International Multidisciplinary Conference (18-19 July 2024) and the BAM 2024 Conference (2-6 September 2024).
2. The results of the study will be presented at other universities during official visits to these universities.
3. Depending on the availability of data, the study intends to include the latest data (2024) in the analysis. This will involve another round of data collection in the last quarter of 2024.
4. Interviews and observation will also be conducted at some of the participating companies.
5. The focus will be on dissemination of the findings of the study. Two papers will be developed for submission to international journals.
