Outline of Research at the Start |
Sleep quality and its health benefits are defined by slower frequency of neuronal synchronization. This project studies which cellular ion channels regulate sleep quality from the cerebral cortex. In year 1, ion channels will be mutated in cell cultures of cortical neurons, and the effect on neuronal synchronization is analyzed with microelectrodes. In year two, ion channels are mutated in adult mice and sleep time and quality is studied via the electroencephalogram. Also in year two, the impact of extended wakefulness on molecular aggregations formed by ion channels in the brain is analyzed.
