Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements
This research project aimed to construct a corpus of Japanese Heritage Language (JHL) speakers overseas, primarily in South America, and to conduct applied studies based on it. Through this project, we were able to (1) collect natural conversational data from three domains: home, school, and community, and (2) gather multilingual dialogue data between heritage language children and teachers from various countries around the world. Furthermore, we collected and publicly released narrative videos of over 100 JHL speakers online under the title JHL Voices. We also developed a framework for designing tsunagari-go (heritage language) schools and conducted ongoing fieldwork in Nikkei communities across South America. In 2022, we published a book summarizing the research findings, and in 2023, we hosted an international conference in Sydney to disseminate the results and build a global research network.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
